GREEN SPACES
Admittedly, Angel is far more industrial. Luckily it benefits from being part of Islington, which has many cute ( and fun! ) parks to enjoy. One of the highest recommended green spaces is Barnard Park.
Barnard Park is a spacious park with many amenities. As it, too, is centrally located, it can often be busy. Though it is well worth the visit. There are multiple refreshment shops, a football ground and plenty of space for lawn sports, and additionally? It’s remarkably well maintained. Especially considering how busy it often gets. Dogs are also allowed and encouraged! The wide-open spaces of Barnard Park are perfect places for pooches to blow off some steam.
Duncan Terrace Gardens is another popular choice. This park is a lot smaller, but still a lovely place for a stroll. You can even get a coffee while you’re wandering around. Not only this: squirrels are popular locals to these quaint gardens. Squirrels and birds, actually! There is even a small collection of birdhouses grouped together and nicknamed ‘Spontaneous City’, which appears to be an adorable way to encourage the preservation of the species that live there.
Owens Field is actually more of a garden, but it’s still worth a visit. It can apparently get quite busy with students. Therefore, if you value your quiet times, plan accordingly. However, Owens Field is notably quieter than many other parks in the area. There are plenty of benches to sit and chill, or perhaps take some time out to read a book or some comics, – whatever takes your fancy. There’s even an art piece available for the artsy individuals out there to appreciate.
THINGS TO DO
As stated, Angel is a central London location. It benefits not only from fantastic travel links but also from having its own tempting array of local venues to choose from. Many are decorated with colourful street art or eccentric outdoor décor. Here are just a few local favourites that we’d recommend:
- The Camden Head is a popular pub that hosts 7 days a week free comedy shows. You could witness an experienced act, or a newcomer comedian trying their material for the first time. Either way, you’re guaranteed a fun time–and it won’t cost you a penny … except for the drinks, of course!
- The O2 Academy Islington is only a five-minute walk from Angel Station.
- The James Freeman Gallery is a contemporary art gallery with regularly changing exhibitions. Find out more here!
- Electrowerks is an old tube carriage that has been refurbished as a club. There’s even a courtyard area available if that wasn’t cool enough!
- Sadler’s Wells Theatre is a performing arts theatre specialising in dance.
- The Old Queens Head is one of Angels’ many quality pubs. They boast of having the ‘best DJ and live music in London.” Why not find out for yourself?
AMENITIES
Angel benefits from its very own shopping centre: Angel Centre. Not only is this a very convenient hub of popular brand stores, but it also has a variety of chain restaurants and even a Vue cinema available. There are even regular events, such as a sustainable market event.
There are a variety of express supermarkets available, as well as smaller corner stores and grocery stores. Angel being so close to London’s heart means that there isn’t too much space for humongous superstores. There is however a larger Sainsburys in the area, as well as a Waitrose and an Iceland. The majority are also within walking distance to Angel Station.
Speaking of, Angel Station attracts a lot of commuters. Commuters need a lot of coffee, and therefore, attract a lot of coffee shops. Angel is known for its cafes and coffee shops. Kobo cafe is a particularly popular choice, with caffeinated options and healthy juice options!
SCHOOLS
Angel is a very popular choice for young families. Not only are there fantastic travel links to commute outside of Angel itself, but the schools local to Angel are almost all rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted.
There’s an impressive selection of nurseries, primary and secondary schools. As usual, there are even single-gender and mixed-gender options available – as well as public and private schools. There is also a Sixth Form nearby in City and Islington College, as well many London Universities being only a short commute away.
If you’re looking for a more rural home with equally fantastic education opportunities, why not try Cambridge?
