The Clooper Guide To Marylebone

Marylebone is famous for being one of Londons most fashionable areas. However, this is far from its only positive quality. Affluent, artistic, surprisingly affordable and brimming with a bright community, Marylebone is a fine place to call home.

Charming, chic and centrally located, this residential area is brimming with life. Looking for a welcoming community? Want your home to be nestled between gorgeous park life, delightful independently owned cafes and the famed Madame Tussauds? Marylebone just might be the place for you.

CULTURE AND COMMUNITY

Marylebone is a rich tapestry of culture, kept relevant by a warm and proud community. In fact, the community of this area is one of the driving forces that keep it so popular with new residents. Marylebone has been home to names such as Charles Dickens (the Charles Dickens, yes!), Adam Ant and Jimmy Hendrix. This star-studded history has helped sky-rocket Marylebone to one of the most desirable places to call your home in London. Not only this, but even fictional stars have frequented this area, namely Sherlock Homes of 221b Baker Street.

Home to the classical music venue Wigmore Hall, ringed by quintessential London parks and boasting also the grand Wallace Collection gallery, it’s unsurprising that Marylebone has such a rich culture. Wigmore Hall alone is a powerhouse of British history. It frequently hosts new and exciting events, which you can browse and book here. Similarly, the Wallace Collection is a stunning venue celebrating its 120th anniversary. Get a glimpse of its fantastic history here.

As well as the more extravagant attractions, Marylebone is esteemed for its fayres and markets. Marylebone Farmers Market, Church Street Market and The Annual Marylebone Summer Fayre are just some to name. In this area, one could walk from the market, home again, and still find themselves with time spare for the gallery or theatre perhaps.

FABULOUS FOOD

Marylebone has been tagged as a haven for food-lovers, rightfully so! There are restaurants of all cultures and cuisines dotted around the streets, primarily the High Street. Because of this, residents may find themselves spoilt for choice, so we’ve rounded up some of the best recommendations for great grub in this area.

  • Chiltern Firehouse. Once a bustling celebrity hotspot, it has lately simmered down so you don’t necessarily need to be a famous actor or singer to attend. It doesn’t hurt to be, however! Chiltern is famous for its star-studded regulars, though its also home to tantalizing food curated by Nuno Mendes. Mendes is a michelin star chef, so you’re in for a treat at this venue!
  • Kintan is esteemed for its tantalizing Japanese food and its take on Yakiniku, inspired by Korean BBQ, which revolves around a grill built into your very table. If you’re looking for an involved experience, Kintan is for you. They also have frequent happy hours and dinner deals.
  • Pachamama. This dinky little low-lit basement restaurant is a local legend for its bottomless brunch. As well as this, it also boasts a very affordable price tag! Enjoy some Peruvian food decorated by fashionable cutlery and plates and then move on to some cocktails while their resident weekend DJ treats you to some tunes. Mind you don’t dance too soon after eating though! The need to groove is a strong one, but a tummy ache will only spoil the fun!

LOCAL AMENITIES

While Marylebone is indeed a smorgasbord of eccentric venues, it’s still home to your basic amenities. Big brand grocery retailers and chain cafes and restaurants nestle into the high street. Butchers, fishmongers and even La Fromagerie, an award-winning cheese shop.

It is also an absolute dream for shoppers. There is a fantastic array of shops to choose from: vintage, modern, fashion, gift shops, homewares and much much more. Far too much to include in a short paragraph! As well, there are also multiple gyms dotted around. However, many of the locals are said to frequent yoga or pilates studios. Else, the local spa is a big hit as well!

GORGEOUS GREENERY

Hyde Park and Regents Park are two of Londons most favoured Royal Parks. There is a significant draw for younger folk with regular events, though the scenery and picnic space are popular with all ages. Whether you’re a sports fan or just adore a good walk among nature, you’re sure to find something to do in these vast and charming parks. Royal parks are a popular draw for residential areas, as seen here in Marylebone and also Teddington, one of our recent area guides. Have a little look here.
