Right to rent checks are conducted by a landlord<\/a> on tenants to be sure a proposed tenant has the right to live in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But why does a landlord need to check that a tenant has the right to rent in the UK? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because it’s a requirement. The 2014 Immigration Act required landlords in England to check to see if prospective tenants have the “right to rent” property in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the COVID pandemic hit, in-person checks were halted, even though landlords in England are still required to conduct the checks online (There are plans to revert to in-person checks from this September- 2021).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales are currently exempt from this regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
