5 Things To Look Out For When Renting a Property

A rental property brings with it a slew of expectations. Naturally, the tenant has a lot of factors to consider before renting an apartment, and it’s even better if these are met. Factors such as location/neighbourhood or proximity to local amenities, public transportation, good schools, and so on could be considered but they are not the only factors.
There are basic ‘checks’ that can indicate whether you’re about to get a dream home or a nightmare and trust us when we say you don’t want the latter. So, if you’re unsure where to begin, these are the basics to look for during your rental property walkthrough.
Look Out For Pests
You don’t want to discover pests like rodents or roaches only after moving into a new apartment, so it’s critical to keep an eye out for signs of pests during the rental property walkthrough.
Look Out For Safety Equipment
Examine to see if any safety equipment, such as smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors, are installed and in good working order. Is there a burglar alarm? Can you lock the windows, for example? These are all very important considerations. If they are not in place, you may request that the landlord put them in place before you move in.
Look Out For Prior Damages
Examine the walls; are there any holes in them? Check the floors, light switches/bulbs, windows, and so on to ensure they are not damaged, and if they are, you could request that the landlord repair them. Otherwise, make certain that these obvious damages are documented as proof that they were not your fault.
Check The Less Obvious Things
Look out for appliances such as cookers, refrigerators, and ovens. When conducting a rental property walkthrough, you may not consider turning on the cooker or oven or checking the refrigerator to ensure that these appliances are working, but you should. Make a mental note to double-check the less obvious items.
